Potassium Iodide, or: Where did it go?

Permanent Linkby SgtMustache on Tue Apr 05, 2011 11:06 am

Hello Dear Friends, or so the episode of Firesign Theatre would start:
Recently (a couple days before the Japan meltdown) I was looking through the medicine cabinet to discard and update the meds and etc. stored there.....to discover that our Potassium Iodide tabs had expired some five (5) years ago. EGAD!
So, a few days later I reminded SWMBO to get new ones at the drugstore(s) here in Plymouth MA....after all, that's where she got them before, when we were notified by the Town to have them to hand, since we live near Pilgrim nuke plant and another farther down the Cape (Cape Cod).

To my surprise, she came back to tell me that the head pharmacist does NOT have them in stock, and had not been able to get them for some years, repeatedly told they were "On Backorder'.
Keep in mind that every year we get a fresh, shiny new calendar from the Town of Plymouth with our Evacuation and Assembly routes, and instructions to get the tabs at the local drug stores, and to keep them on hand. The TOWN tells us this.
OK says I, we'll get them on-line.
The DAY BEFORE the Japanese meltdown we ordered them, through Amazon, $9.99 per set and postage; they said they will be shipped to arrive on Monday.
Monday, no tabs.
Tuesday no tabs.
And so on.
Friday we get a message the the order was summarily cancelled. No reason why.

Hmmmm....guess the Feds decided to send them all to Japan!
Another check on other Web Sites shows that the tabs ARE available, but prices running from $60 to $170 a dose set. OUCH!

Now I'm not sure if you are aware of this, but there is only ONE company licensed to make these Potassium Iodide tabs for distribution.

SO, what's a spud to do?

Believe it or not, Flintstone's Chewable Vitamins contain Potassium Iodide! Thanks to Sgt. Fritz for telling me and others in our S.O.S. group! (Survival Of Steel, we're a weird fan club of sorts.)
Just think, I can eat Betty and get some (don't know how much) protection.

Also make certain that any salt you add to your food is Iodized. Iodide is a nutritional need to ensure thyroid control, and one cause of lack of Iodide is Goiter, or swelling of the Thyroid.

Hope this has been informative.
I'm going to investigate this, and perhaps submit it to the local news feed, see what happens.
