Basics and my approach....
by PhunkyMunky
First and foremost!! I AM NOT AN EXPERT AT ANYTHING!!! I’ve just learned a few things along the way, and one may look at and argue whatever they like, but this is simply as I see things. You are not required to see things like I do in order to read this.
I wasn’t sure what I would put here, so this post will be my first. Being that my background is primarily hunting and Infantry, m preps focus on a more military aspect, but I take from other things as well because that is what SHTFM is all about, gaining and sharing knowledge.
My planning and prepping follows a few facts I personally HAVE to face, and these are the following:
1: Job loss. It’s entirely possible I could lose my job, and so I must make sure to be prepared to ride out the tough times that would be sure to follow while I try to gain another job.
2: Natural Disasters. I live in an earthquake prone area, and have 3 volcanoes not too terribly far away. So it’s important that I am able to leech as little as possible off the government, because lets face it, they’re unreliable and can’t be trusted. So, when that sort of SHTF happens, we’re ALL on our own until proven otherwise.
3: I fully believe this Country will collapse soon, and the reasoning no longer matters, really. It’s going to happen, and it’s not going to be stopped. May happen soon, or may happen a few years down the road, but happen it will.
In 2 out of 3 of these, we could very well end up with a WROL situation. WROL = Without Rule of Law. It is for this reason my experience in the Army and security work will be necessary. And for this, I make sure I complete my preps in the following way….
Personal Defense
Personal defense is in essential key to survival in WROL. Every single person that is capable of defending themselves should have at least the basic defensive tools with them all the time. This is a requirement, not an option, period. This does not matter with gender or age, as some would like to think. What is the saying? “A bullet from a 10 year old is just as effective as one from a 40 year old”. If you cannot defend your life and your livelihood, than you are a sheep among wolves in WROL.
You can use whatever you have at your disposal, however, I personally have a firm belief in firearms, they just seem the most effective, although I do have knives and such to use as well, if it comes to that.
Be prepared to defend you and your loved ones, man up about it, and make that conscious decision right now to DO SOMETHING rather than let someone do harm to yourself or your family and friends in order to take what you have.
Area Defense
Be it a property of yours, a neighborhood, your street… You NEED 360 degree security. In my own preps, I have maps of my area, escape routes marked, places good for defense marked, and Google earth on everything around me. I know my area well, including multiple routes out of the area in the event that it’s just to dangerous to stay. If you’re in a neighborhood, I suggest once things get bad you work out things pertaining to security with your neighbors, know spots to block off, and set things up so there is controlled access. It’s really the only way to be, otherwise you risk gangs and other people just rolling right in and doing as they wish.
Secondary defense
This is a fall back point. If all goes to hell, you need a secondary spot, with a tighter perimeter, to defend from. This is what I call “The Alamo”. This should be done up with interlocking fields of fire, tightly controlled access, and quickly gotten to.
Beans and Bullets
This is what you’ll eat, what you’ll live on. An army lives on it’s stomach, right? The same goes for everyone else. If you don’t eat, you lose energy amongst a lot of other things. I say Beans and Bullets because it encompasses ALL of your supplies, from food, to medical, to hygiene, to bullets, to clothes. A system to haul these things is also needed, should you have the need to “Bug Out”.
When considering your defense, be it personal or otherwise, you’ll need to consider multi functionality. For myself, I make sure some of my weapons are useable for hunting. For example, I’ve got an old Springfield 1903A3 that my dad redneck gunsmith and screwed up, taking what WAS a $2000-4000 rifle and making it have ZERO value. So, I put a new composite stock on it and will be getting it drilled and tapped and set up with a scope, sling, and bipod. This will serve as both a hunting rifle and Designated Marksman’s Rifle. I ALSO have a Marlin 30-30. It’s a decent brush rifle for deer. I also will be getting a Remington 870 that can be used as both a secondary weapon and for hunting.
Weapon Choice
It’s up to YOU to research, ask questions, and make the decision as to what you wish to do for weapons. Me, I have an AK-47, a Glock 22, and my 1903. This covers a Primary weapon, Secondary, and medium to long range rifle. I ALSO plan, as mentioned, to get the shotgun, and I plan to get an M4, and a Beretta Cx4. This opens up options for me. The same goes with my gear, currently I have an LBE type set up, but I’ll be getting a chest rig for the AK as well, M16 mag pouches, and a set up that carries M4 mags. The more options for load outs I have, the more flexible I will be, IMO. I will, also, likely, get a crossbow or recurve. This way I can keep things a bit quieter if need be.
My opinion for weapons arsenal is this:
1: Primary weapon (Main Battle Rifle of your choosing)
2: Secondary weapon (First a handgun, then shotgun)
3: Designated Marksman Rifle (Medium to long range precision shooting)
4: Specialty Weapons, like a sub gun.
5: Less Lethal options
Reasoning for less lethal options is that sometimes killing someone just isn’t the appropriate response. If someone isn’t a combatant, it’s much nicer to simply pepper spray them than it is to shoot them for apparently no reason. For this you should ALSO consider zip cuffs, and other means to restrain and /or keep them out of the way.
There are a million different ways of hauling your crap, a million different combat rigs, and each have their won strengths and weaknesses. Think of personal taste, function, comfort, and utility.
Like I said, I first went old school with an LBE, then next will be a chest rig, and after that? Probably armor with sappy plates. 2 of 3 of these can be modified depending on the weapon I’m carrying.
