DIY How to Make an HD TV Antenna

Permanent Linkby Fictional Character on Sat Oct 02, 2010 8:17 am

Ok so we decided to see if we could even get any channels where we are at.
We have not had tv service for over a year, but hey what the heck.

First i found a website that is listed below, here are some of my photos.

Starting project, with cuts of wire and a 2 x 4
Wire i cut at 14 inches and the 2 x 4 i used was about 24 inches

I did not use a Balun i just attached the coax wire and it works fine, I also used a part of old garden hose to insulate the wires. Then mounted to a 14 foot 2 x 4 and stuck up in the air.

I used a small piece of 1/2" x 1/2" hardware cloth for the reflector. Then mounted my CB Antenna to the top of it and stuck it in the air. We now have a total of about 12 channels and we are out in the middle of no where.

I would rate this project as EASY to do and it works.

1. 22 inch section of 2x3 or 1x3 board
2. 18 Screws
3. 18 Washers, sized to fit on the screws to clamp down wire
4. 15 feet of wire. Roughly 5 feet of copper three conductor house wiring will do fine. Coat-hangers can work if stripped of paint at all connections.
5. Reflector grid (Mesh like reflective metallic material.) Two 15x9 grill screens work well for a few dollars. (See first video below.)
6. One Balun - A thing with a coax plug on one side, two wires with screw holes on the other. These are commonly used to attach old TV's to coax antenna's (or cable.) They are inexpensive (I've seen them in bulk for as little as 30 cents each), and commonly available. My local dollar store carries them!
