How To Skin Logs
I tried skinning a log that fell down from the weather a few weeks ago, but the log was so dry. If you skin them as soon as you cut them they will be WET then, it will be easier to peel the bark off of it using the draw blade I have mentioned. Skinning the log works great with a draw blade that has two handles for easy skinning. You just take the blade as it has one handle on each side of the blade and you work it from top to bottom at a angle so thebark comes off easier and less elbow muscle. It was my first time, and it was a cinch so im happy to say that I will be doing this more often. Watch the video, and you will understand that to skin bark off a log as you will have to have the blade angled to get better results. As this was my first time, I did not know what to expect but, I can tell you this, it wasn't what I expected. You can make log furniture once the logs are skinned and dried and after you stain paint it, it will look nice as a piece of furniture that you have made. The wood chippings that come from the bark, you can use as decoration in your landscape beds or use it anyway you like.

Some types of trees are easier skinned by first cutting a line the length of the log then prying off the bark by slipping a chisel or screwdriver under the bark. I've gotten entire "tubes" of bar this way. This can be useful for primitive piping systems, for irrigation or to bring water closer to your shack.
Also tree skinning is easiest in the spring when the sap is rising and the leaves are developing. The bark is filled with water and the living part of the bark is easier to seperate from the trunk
Skinning is hardest in mid winter.

Great to know, ill keep that in mind. I do know that bark is easier to skin with a blade when its damp or wet, but be careful for hiding bugs, parasites, ants, etc as they will just pop out especially white worms (maggots)?
